Are There Elements of Healthcare IT That Won’t Eventually Be On the Cloud?

I came across this video from Dell that looks at the Future of Healthcare and how cloud computing is working to transform healthcare. It’s a marketing video for Dell, but it brings up some interesting points about where healthcare IT is headed:

After watching the video, I asked myself the question that’s the title of this blog post: Are There Elements of Healthcare IT That Won’t Eventually Be On the Cloud?

I think the answer is no. I think it will also take healthcare a while to actually get fully on the cloud. However, it’s happening across every aspect of healthcare IT. Plus, there are going to be a number of healthcare IT innovations in the future that are only going to be cloud based. I think genomics and personalized medicine is the perfect example. Those innovations are going to both require cloud technology to make it a reality.

Far Too Often We Forget the Human Element of Healthcare

I recently wrote a post on EMR and HIPAA that talked about the social and behavioral factors that influence someone’s health and wellness. When you look at all those factors you realize that really improving someone’s health is a complex problem. However, when you get it right, it has such far reaching consequences.

I was reminded of this when I saw this great video from GetWellNetwork. I’m told they showed this at their user conference before their CEO started his keynote. Take a few minutes to watch this video:

It’s great to see a company that focuses so much on the patient. I love patient stories like this. It reframes and reminds me of the important work we’re doing in healthcare.

Great Interview with Jonathan Bush

Jonathan Bush is the very best interview in healthcare IT. A few years back, Neil Versel grabbed Jonathan Bush at his athenahealth cloud party at HIMSS for an interview. It’s now become quite a tradition. They talk a lot about CommonWell, the impact of Medicare penalties, and much more. Here’s this year’s interview of Jonathan Bush at HIMSS by Neil Versel:

P.S. Yes, HIMSS was forever ago and I’m just catching up on stuff now.

Solving the Non-EHR Challenges a Practice Faces with Vishal Gandhi – Full Video and Transcript

As part of my ongoing series of Healthcare Scene Google Plus hangouts where I sit down with top leaders in healthcare IT, I had a chance to interview Vishal Gandhi, CEO of ClinicSpectrum. We talk about a broad range of challenges that face a practice and his ideas on how to solve those problems. I love this conversation because it starts to address more of the many ways that technology can improve a clinical practice other than just through an EHR or PM system.

You can watch the full video below or read the transcript of the interview:

What Is Population Health?

This is a really important question that I think healthcare leaders across the country and even the world are trying to figure out. This video does a pretty good job of explaining the current state of population health.

We’d love to hear your thoughts and comments on population health as it stands today and where it’s headed in the comments.

Medication Reconciliation Issues and Insights Video

The jury is in and there is not a trace of reasonable doubt that medication errors, especially those resulting from poor medication reconciliation, are a persistent problem for the healthcare industry. Adversely affecting all parties involved—provider organizations, quality managers, clinicians, and patients—ineffective med rec has been cited as the culprit for many of these errors.

First Databank recently put out this video to start the conversation about the importance of medication reconciliation and the evolution of it over time. I think this is an important conversation that doesn’t get enough attention.
